History of Selhurst Park

Selhurst Park is a historic football stadium located in the London Borough of Croydon, England, and is the home of Crystal Palace Football Club.

Early Years and Construction (1922): Selhurst Park was officially opened in 1922 after Crystal Palace FC needed a new home following the demise of their former ground, The Nest. The stadium was constructed on a former brickfield, with the initial cost of construction being £30,108.

The Arthur Wait Stand (1924): In 1924, the Arthur Wait Stand was built, which is now known as the Main Stand. This addition increased the stadium's capacity and provided covered seating for spectators.

Modernisation and Upgrades (2010s): In the 2010s, Selhurst Park underwent a series of modernisation projects. These included improvements to the stadium's facilities, the installation of new floodlights, and enhancements to the Main Stand. The iconic Holmesdale Road Stand, known for its passionate fans, remained largely unchanged in terms of its structure.

Notable Matches and Moments: Selhurst Park has been the stage for numerous memorable matches and moments. It witnessed Crystal Palace's historic run to the FA Cup final in 1990, a remarkable semi-final win over Liverpool, and the famous "Crystanbul" match in 2014, where the club came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Liverpool.

Legacy and Atmosphere: Selhurst Park is renowned for its passionate and vocal fanbase, particularly in the Holmesdale Stand. The atmosphere generated by the supporters has earned the stadium a reputation as one of the most intimidating places to play for opposing teams.

Future Developments: As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, there were discussions and plans for potential stadium redevelopment, with the club considering improvements and a possible expansion to meet modern requirements.
